Yansee YanThoughts 001: Brunch in BA

Here’s a new thing that I am going to start from time to time. Just little blurbs about observations and thoughts that I’m having as I experience new cities and try new things.

For this first thought, I’ll tackle brunch in Buenos Aires. From what I’ve experienced so far, there isn’t a really big breakfast culture here. Lots of places don’t open until 10 AM or later. Even coffee shops. How crazy is that?! It’s especially hard for jetlagged travelers. It’s not fun to wake up at 4 AM, 5 AM, 6 AM and then have to wait until 10 AM for a cup of coffee. No sir, that’s a tough one.

Now, just because the city doesn’t wake up until later in the day, they still have breakfast menus at plenty of places, all day long. But one observation I’ve made is that they have a la carte menu items and then a “Brunch” set. The brunch set is really an amazing deal that consists of mini portions of several menu items all served together. For instance, a typical brunch set will include items like: Coffee, juice, scrambled eggs, a fruit plate, a pastry, a salmon taster, prosciutto and cheese. A decent spread, right?

All of those items a la carte would cost way more than the set. It’s kind of a nice perk if you are a grazer like me. It’s not so good for people who really just want their eggs.

A brunch set is also, more often than not, offered as a set for 2 people. This has been bad for us when we’ve brunched in uneven numbers. Why must we brunch in pairs? Can’t a girl just eat her brunch solo in peace without the judgement BA eating establishments? …Oh… sorry. Did I project that on you? My bad.

All in all, brunch has been a pretty great experience so far, but maybe take a friend in case the set is for two.

Until next time, let’s YanSEE YanDO this thing! Cheers!
